The Paris Motor Show-bound Lexus UX concept car previews new Lexus design language, inside and out
Lexus will reveal a new concept car at the 2016 Paris Motor Showlater this month called the UX. Rather than directly preview an upcoming model the concept “takes Lexus’ design language to the next level,” according to the Japanese luxury brand.
Only one exterior image of the UX was released initially, but now the brand has revealed the car's interior with a new teaser pic (below). A transparent globe displays driving information behind the steering wheel, like a hologram rather than traditional dials. The hologram theme continues on the dash, with a floating display for the infotainment system.
There are no door mirrors, but instead there are cameras facing backwards - it's smaller and lighter than a normal mirror. Plus, there's a removeable sound bar in the cabin.
The UX is very striking from the outside, too: flared wheel arches, muscular haunches and huge alloys wheels are its distinctive features. Rear-hinged doors at the back indicate the absence of a B-pillar, too.
In terms of its proportions the short front and rear overhangs plus relatively narrow rear door indicate the UX could be a compact SUV – smaller than NX crossover. Although Lexus has not issued any details on the powertrain, rear tailpipes indicate there is likely to be an internal combustion engine under the bonnet – possibly hooked up to an electric motor.
The concept has been created at Lexus’s European Design Centre, ED2. We’ll get our first glimpse of the cabin at Paris but Lexus has said: “The interior combines traditional craftsmanship with high-tech manufacturing techniques.”
